The fragile bond between Tessa Miyanashatawit, a fifteen-year-old Yakama Indian girl, and mixed-blood psychologist, Dr. Ret Barlow, has begun to heal both of them. However, things fall apart when Tessa is arrested for alcohol abuse. Barlow forces her into treatment, and she vows never to speak to him again. With the support of Auntie Elisi and grandfather Arnold’s gift of Ámashitum, a wild horse, Barlow may be able to help Tessa again- that is, as long as her gang-involved boyfriend, Parker Heslah, doesn't succeed in scaring him off. Parker and his crew have been running guns for ‘Cowboy’ Jack Brie, her mother’s ex-boyfriend, and Tessa's childhood abuser. Soon Brie reenters Tessa’s world, threatening her family, especially her baby half-sister, Ce Ce. Now Barlow’s trying to step in, unaware that Brie sees him coming.
"Remarkable and enthralling . . . This deserves to be read by everyone in this country! Takes the reader into a world familiar to too few of us, immerses us in that world, makes us fall in love with some of the characters, want to throttle others, makes us laugh and cry and think. Everyone I know who has read this book has loved it! David E. Walker's writing is crystal-clear, perceptive, and impassioned." -Paula Caplan, Ph.D., Author of 'When Johnny and Jane Come Marching Home' and 'They Say You're Crazy" "I have grown up all my life on the Yakama Reservation and seen many of the things in this book play out. I am very pleased with the way Tessa overcomes many things in the book. This book shows the true strength of a young native woman." -Margaret Strong, Yakama/Puyallup
